I've been resetting and rebooting over and over, and downloading and installing one printer driver update after another from HP and Apple until, hallelujah, yesterday the printer finally got the message and printed the image in the middle of a standard sheet of paper. This was happening with ALL paper sizes since the High Sierra update. The HP F4580 was able to do this printing before the Mac OS update. The printer window says "Paper Size Error", then the "'Filter' Failed" error and stops sending the file to the HP F4580. Since updating High Sierra to 10.13.6, I have been unable to do this. While I cannot say this HP F4850 inkjet printer ever worked very well, for many years, I have been able to print, usually from a pdf, on the top half of a standard sheet of paper by setting a custom size (8.5" x 5.5").
